Slow Speed Chase

October 21st, 2008. (4 months, 2 weeks old.) by ben

Just hold still there, Atlas, and I’m gonna catch you!

Ok, now you’re just mocking me….

Ben-O’s Paradox

October 19th, 2008. (4 months, 2 weeks old.) by ben

I’m running as fast as I can (in my Jumperoo), but I’m never getting to the cat!  Can somebody explain this to me?  Is this a paradox?

(Ed. Note: Apologies to Xeno…)

Winston Churchill

October 18th, 2008. (4 months, 2 weeks old.) by ben

Some people think I look like Winston Churchill.  But then they say that all babies look like Mr. Churchill.  But if that is true, isn’t that just a nice way of saying that Winston Churchill looked like a baby?

I think I need some sort of hat to really complete the impersonation.

New Jumper!

October 17th, 2008. (4 months, 2 weeks old.) by ben

The new jumper is really great, but I haven’t yet figured out how… to …. turn…. a…. round….  I have to keep an eye on those Mommy and Daddy people after all.

There we go.  Oh, wait… I guess it wasn’t me that turned around was it?  On a different topic…  Ummmm… what’s this shiny thing here?

The Usual Suspects

October 15th, 2008. (4 months, 2 weeks old.) by ben

My editor convinced me to go with ‘The Usual Suspects’ for the title of this post, but I’m not so sure I understand why that’s funny.  All I know is I was having fun today hanging out with my super-duper friendly buddies who mysteriously ALL decided to join me in my pack-n-play today.  Yeee ha!

Cooking up something special

October 14th, 2008. (4 months, 1 week old.) by ben

Mommy is starting to introduce me to the fundamentals of cooking with my very own spoon, and loaner 1/4 cup measure.  So far, cooking is really fun!  I’m told that eating what you cook is even better, but I guess I’m not old enough for that yet.

Of course, the student can always play the part of teacher as well.  Here, I’m adding that “special something”. Yummmm…

Exploring my room

October 11th, 2008. (4 months, 1 week old.) by ben

The other day I set out exploring the new parts of the jungle mural that Daddy added for me.   I like to imagine that my tortoise and finch are from the faraway and exciting Galápagos Islands.

Thanks to Isabelle (who I got to meet this week!) for the cool explorer shirt and cargo pants!

Hi Isabelle!

Motherly Love… solved.

October 9th, 2008. (4 months, 1 week old.) by ben

OK… so not quite.  But I do think I’ve worked out part of the formula to calculate how time and distance work into the equation.  What I’ve noticed is that when Mommy goes away, her motherly urge to return (and bask in my presence) depends on the time and distance.

As long as she is close enough, the time doesn’t matter.  But once she’s far enough away, then the time factor kicks in exponentially.  Distance matters less in contributing to the urge once the distance threshold has been crossed.

So we have a discontinuous function U (urge to return) of distance d and time t, U(d,t).

For d < D, U(d,t) = 0

for d >= D, U(d,t) = t1.2/T’ * (d-D)/D’

where D is approximately 100 meters, and D’ and T’ are a scaling factors.

If any of my math buddies out there (you know who you are) can help me express  this relationship better, please do let me know.

One other interesting tidbit: Mommy discovered recently that the distance d really is a spacial distance, and not a distance as one would often express in while traveling by car in L.A., i.e. in units of time.   In other words, it matters not how long it would take her to return, just how far away she is.  Being 10 minutes away by car can seem further away than 20 minutes on foot!  How strange!

And, just to make this post more interesting, here’s a picture of me & Daddy from our recent professional photo shoot.

Irony

October 8th, 2008. (4 months, 1 week old.) by ben

I’m thinking of starting a picture dictionary to help my vocabulary.

(Ed. Note: Now now, Ben, even the best baby in the universe probably still spits up from time to time!)

Mirror mirror on the floor…

October 7th, 2008. (4 months old.) by ben

… who’s the cutest of the dwarves?  Ok, so I’m kinda short, even if I’m not a dwarf.  You try coming up with a word that rhymes with “floor”.  Now do it with my vocabulary.  See?

Sometimes Mommy puts the mirror out for me to look in during Tummy Time.  I almost always smile when I see that kid in the mirror.  He is so good looking and happy.  Can’t he come out and play?  I guess he can’t since it doesn’t look like he could fit through to come to my side.  M&D, can we get a bigger one of these parallel dimension portal thingys?
